I have always been confused about the signs next to the highways close to corrections facilities. The sign states “please do not pick up hitch hikers”. Please take the following as a humorous observation, not a political statement.
Here is my confusion: if we believed that our corrections facilities were correcting the people that are in them, why should I be concerned about picking up an ex-con? Additionally if the corrections facility feels confident about their security, why would they be compelled to put the sign up?
So what I take from the sign is that the particular facility is neither confident about its ability to rehabilitate nor its ability to retain its residents. I am sure that the sign is a good idea, its the message that confuses me.
